Christmas is when the hopes and fears of all the years met for the first time. It still happens. In my Christmas sermon, I tell a story about when they met in rural Louisiana in 1964, in one of our best family stories, Boopah and the Christmas of Hopes and Fears.

Mary was visited by an angel. I've had lots of experience with them myself. Now, the question for our congregation is can we BECOME angels? Sound far-fetched? Not if you understand Greek! That's when you discover that an "ἄγγελος" (Aggelos) - AKA an angel - is a messenger from God. We CAN do that - if we choose to.

Today we told the backstory of John the Baptist. In it, Zechariah balks at becoming whom God created him to be. I think we do that a lot. It seems God has more faith in us than we do in ourselves. What should we do with The Gift of Faith?
