Wisdom from above is . . . full of mercy and good fruits
What's the Church's business? To manage access to God, or to make sure that everyone who wants to act in Jesus' name to heal the world has the opportunity to do so? If our business is the former, we're doomed; no one wants what we have to sell. But if it's the latter, There's No Stopping Us because God is at work in us.

Once again it was tempting to tell people, "Just read James' letter and DO IT." The more I read James, the more I disagree with dear Martin Luther's estimation that it's a "letter of straw." When Jesus says his disciples need to pick up their cross and follow him, he's not inviting people to be masochists, but to give all they've got to live into the Reign of God. Having Breakfast with God is not about what we get to eat, but what we give to feed the world.

In the Gospel for this week, Jesus answers the prayers of two Gentiles, the ancient enemies of the Jewish people. Does how he treats one of the Desperate Housewives of Tyre, and James' assertion that our faith is dead when we ignore the poor, have political implications for American Christians?

Cleanliness is next to godliness, to be sure. But when we are Laboring with a Scrub Brush, what should we be cleaning? Jesus says, don't worry about the dishes, scrub your heart.
